Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Quickly encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text strings. 100% client-side privacy.
How Base64 Encoding Works (RFC 4648)
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format. It divides binary sequences into 6-bit chunks, where each chunk maps directly to one of 64 printable characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, and /). It is designed to safely transmit data across media and protocols that are designed to handle textual information without corruption.
Standard Base64
Uses + and / characters with = padding at the end to ensure 24-bit alignment.
URL-Safe Base64
Replaces + with - and / with _ so the encoded string can be used inside URL parameters and filenames without percent-encoding.
Data Expansion Overhead
Base64 increases data size by approximately 33% (4 output bytes for every 3 input bytes).
Command-Line Quick Reference
Encode and decode strings or files natively from your shell:
# Encode a string in Linux or macOS: echo -n "Hello, World!" | base64 # Decode a Base64 string in Linux: echo -n "SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQ==" | base64 -d # Decode a Base64 string in macOS: echo -n "SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQ==" | base64 -D
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Base64 a form of encryption?+
No. Base64 is an encoding format, not encryption. It does not use keys and offers zero cryptographic security. Anyone can immediately decode a Base64 string back into the original data.
What are the padding equal signs (=) at the end of Base64?+
Base64 processes input in 3-byte blocks. If the input data is not an exact multiple of 3 bytes, one or two = characters are appended as padding to complete the final 4-character output group.
Is my input text uploaded or logged?+
Never. All encoding and decoding operations run 100% locally in your browser sandbox using native browser APIs. Zero data is transmitted to EasyLauncher servers.
